the cast of ycc 7

Hokay, I've revamped the site for the nth time, this time changing the title as well as removing the tacky banner =).

Anyway. Before I go on about OB, first let me introduce to you the people that made it great.

Karl - Also known as Koala/Karl Kong/Pavarotti. The instructor guy. Knowledgeable, helpful, and surprisingly well-read. Majored in Lit and minored in PoliSci (because he happened to be chasing a chick *rolls eyes*). Great guy to talk to.

Mim - The only person without a nick, I think. Hails from Ireland, doing her gap year here. Barely 6 months older than me. Fun person, amusing grasp of BM ('Mampuslah!') and Manglish ('also can').

Kim - Kimchi - Chicken hater, OB lover, often mistaken for Malay (actually Punjabi). Got extra pieces of chicken because she doesn't eat it on principle. More fooood =). Her second time at OB. We think she's nuts. She wants to come back a third time to be a course assistant. Definitely bonkers. Outgoing and active.

Farhana - come to think of it, no nick either - Kim's friend since std 1. Dragged along or something. Not quite as fit/active as Kim, has a little anarchist streak (she was telling us about her cons and stuff o_O ).

Sue - Su-su - Quiet, doesn't say much. Urm. Enough said.

Nina - Whiner - 'I'm dying!!... But it's truee!!' Source of much amusement, especially to Vernon. Whined a lot (I mean, seriously a lot), but somehow always completed the task at hand. With our friendly goading, of course. A bit vain. Lives in TTDI, went to the school here. Small world indeed.

Liyana - Hamtaro - Short in stature but strong in spirit. Cheerful person, laughs a lot. Sometimes for no reason. She was with me on the bus back.

Too - Tutu - Simple guy from Ipoh with a penchant for unneccesary utterances. All-round nice guy. Karate and taekwondo dude. Very helpful, never complained, very hardworking. I suppose easy to take advantage of. He celebrated his b'day at the camp. Traumatised us with a belly dance (the girls had to ask...).

Bakar - Prince - I mean, really a prince. Pahang state. Studied in Aus for a long time, though, so he speaks fluent English with a slight accent. Soccer/sports/gym freak. Friendly guy, in tune with club culture.

Razali - Liaq - We just call him by his nick, which is what all his friends call him anyway. Quiet chap with a penchant for irritating Sue (for the heck of it, by calling out her name in a falsetto).

Vernon (not in the photo)- Potato (couch variety)/Porky (on account of a pink sweater of his) - Slacker =). Laid back. Cheerful and likes to laugh when Nina whines, though he's not above complaining himself. City boy in every sense of the word. Leans slightly toward jang-ness. Tickled by naughty jokes (the way he laughs every time Karl tells one... like he's high or something).

And there's me! of course. But you know me, yeah. All of the guys and girls were fantastic companions in the course, terrific folk. We got along like salt and pepper. Peanut butter and jelly. Money and Chinese New Year =). It's hard to say whether we're compatible enough for friendships, in terms of shared interests and stuff, but regardless, we worked well together. That's the important part.

Till next time!

PS, OBS is Outward Bound School and YCC 7 is Youth Challenge Course #7.

movie!

I watched Love Actually and 10 Things I Hate About You (former yesterday, latter today). Both great shows! Romantic comedies, good ones at that. Whee... warm and fuzzy-ness =).

Next two shows: A Beautiful Mind (actually just to see the Princeton campus, but I hear it's a great show), and Battlestar Galatica (the miniseries, not the series). After that... maybe The Godfather, And there's Boston Legal and the 4400.

Hear that wooshing? That's my holidays flying by... =)

old woes

I dislike (hate is too strong a word) being back, for the reason that my family isn't what I wish it was. My mom's always all cranky and stuff, and that kind of thing rubs off on me. Imagine talking to someone whom you feel is always taking potshots. I don't operate so well then...

Whereas, at OB, besides a few quiet moments, I was by and large the person I hope to be. Responsible, friendly, helpful, etc (so I'm still a little boastful =b ). I attribute this to the instructors, who were really patient and understanding (big props to Karl and Mim, yeah). They treated us like adults, and sometimes that respect and expectation is all we need to be better.

After all, small problems aren't the end of the world. You don't need really need a flamethrower to kill a single weed, for example. I didn't have a pair of clean long pants and sleeves for a climbing exercise, and Karl didn't tell me, 'So sad, too bad you irresponsible punk,' but 'Let me see what I can do.' He'd push us along, cheer us up and make us go anyway.

I suppose my behaviour was also partly out of a desire to prove myself worthy, worthy of everything and everyone. At home I just feel rebellious.

*sigh* The needful thing is change. At least I know I have the capacity and the potential. I just need a catalyst, something to push me along.

I will post about the trip, I promise. Whether you want to hear about it or not =)).

homeward found

I'm baaaaaaaack!! And I will say OB was great =)). Except the part where I sprained both my legs, but later, that. Right now, I'll just say it was fantastic, because it really was like stepping out of my world and taking a breather. I put aside every single worry, every single problem, every single thing and lived completely differently. I'm not really sad it's over, but I'm extremely grateful for the experience. It's like pushing the 'pause' button on life, like taking a commercial break. It's precious because we rarely get this sort of opportunity.

More as I rest up! Or maybe after I come back from the typical (and boring) CNY trip to my dad's hometown. One thing about OB, is that it never got boring. Even free time was filled up, in a way: it was used to recuperate and prepare mentally for the next activity.

At any rate, I'm back now. Taking back up all my worries and problems and stuff. *sigh* But maybe I'll make a few changes =).

Cheers!

lumut bound

Gah, I keep finding little mistakes in my apps now that I go through them again... in my MIT app I left out the word Economics when talking about what dept I'd like to study in, and I put apostrophe 's' instead of a simple plural. Oh well, can't be helped.

And I will be on a hiatus of 1 1/2 weeks starting tomorrow: Outward Bound! What a time, you're probably thinking. I really wasn't thinking at all, beyond, 'Hmm, sounds interesting.' I have no pre-regrets =), by and large.

... You know, sometimes you make decisions and you wonder if you had chosen otherwise whether you'd have woken up to a world turned over, or there'd just be a few tremors and things would continue as before. This feels like one of those moments.

See ya in 10 days!

the weekend was...

...very wet, and a memory of a holiday shorter than two complete turns of the moon. In each hour and moment the feelings that marked the holiday came and went, rising and falling like one of those floppy tubes attached to big fans.

The rain made it worse, and then it made it better. And I would say nothing if asked whether I'd like to change anything. I have seen better, but not often; and I will certainly see worse.

Now, if only I could remember whatever it is I should be remembering for college, that spectre of my days.

apparel management

Or, clothes folding. I have achieved the Zen of Clothes Folding, after folding my tcsj shirt with crisp perfection. It was almost an ephiphany.

After, each item has its unique challenges. Should socks be flattened parallel to the foot, giving a profile of the same? Or rolled up, to avoid the mess with the material clumping at the toe-end? How about pants? Folded face first like a shirt, or lengthwise like the socks?

Ah, and the mysteries of shirt folding. Fold sleeve first, then fold side? Or fold side first, then fold sleeve backwards? Also, to achieve a nice crisp folded shirt I learnt one must carefully smoothen out creases where they appear.

Though considering the fact I'm too lazy to iron most of my shirts (a challenge for another day!), most of the creases can't be smoothed away completely. Well, as long as the corners are nice and sharp, it looks decent at the end.
...
Bah. I still rather have someone do it all for me ^^.

the first day of the rest of college

So college begun again today. It would have been an ordinary start to my last semester at Taylor's, but for the cough and runny nose I have.

As far as college goes it was okay, even if the classrooms I use now are awfully cramped. What's the deal with the smaller tables? I suppose they had to shift to us to make room for the berserkly large pre-U intakes. 800 people for A-levels and counting, or so I hear. Makes the bus really crowded. I just might wake up a little earlier, and get my mom to drop me off at an earlier stop so I can grab the last few seats, hehe.

The only thing about college starting is that it seems a time of dreaming is ending, for that is what holidays were. I didn't go out much, but I flew in my dreams and thoughts and hopes. There was space enough in my head. Now it's poised to be filled to the brim again with day-to-day cares and worries. Not that the holidays were ever totally free of trouble =).

Just that... now there's less time, less freedom. Less space for things to happen. I shall miss that.

And time continues to slip by, and another dream-time ends. It's time to work again, with hands that have almost forgotten how. But I want to hold on to the moment a little longer.

water intolerant?

I went out today with Hui Ying, Phang Kit, Shea Kang, and Phoebe. I exercised more than I have in the past month. And I remember why I stopped swimming. Water up the nose, in the ears, but worst of all is the headaches... My head is so throbbingly pain right now.

So let's keep this short.

I haven't been up to much, because there's nothing to do. Lazing around, collecting moss (in a manner of speaking). College does start in a few days, but I'm not that bothered. My mind is not on my studies, it's focused elsewhere and reluctant to return. It seems I straddle two worlds, the world of my college and the world of my solitude, and now I'm used to quietness again, with few punctuations.

Also, it doesn't help that I'm going to be skipping college after just a week to go for an Outward Bound thingy. Hehe. Something to break the monotony, the silence that is almost despair.

Oh, and my maid goes home tomorrow... I suppose that means I have to start picking up after myself. Bah. =)

the tube

It was a year of movies last year... I watched soo many shows >_<. Herewith the list:

Sideways, Chronicles of Narnia, Star Wars, Millions, Johnny English, Sky High, Chicken Little, Batman Begins, Serenity, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python and the Life of Brian, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the 40 yr old Virgin, the Nightmare Before Christmas, Kung Fu Hustle, The Truman Show, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Mr and Mrs Smith, Zorro 2, The Pacifier, Madagascar, Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit, The Shawshank Redemption, Lost in Translation, Bewitched, Osama, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Iron Giant, Destiny Deoxys, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, School of Rock, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish, Forrest Gump, Madagascar...

So. About 35 movies there, say an average of 1.5 hours per movie would make it slightly more than 2 whole days worth of movies. Assuming I didn't forget anything, and it's all to likely I did. Fwoo... And don't forget all 5 seasons of Futurama, and quite a bit of Smallville too.

Altogether, a lot of screen timein 2005 o_O. Alas, so much for a pithy insightful post.
