the empty

Remember that nest in my garden? I checked it again today, and it was slumped to one side, heart-rendingly empty.

Perhaps an angry storm came one night, and lashed at the boughs that the nest was precariously perched upon. One particularly strong gust and the two delicate eggs plummeted into the hard embrace of the earth. I wonder, was there any one to observe their fall? Was there a mournful song in the darkness? Or was it another casualty of life?

There's a lesson to be learned here, about the pathos of living. We can maintain hope, but sometimes, it just gets crushed, and there's nothing for it but to move on. Other times, the egg survives but you don't know whether it will ever hatch, but you move on anyway.
